Research and development project FE 02.0409/2017/LRB: "The potential of roadside areas to promote biodiversity and their role in the spread of alien species".
This year we started a new research project on behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). According to the National Strategy on Biological Diversity, the promotion of biodiversity is a central task of the transport department. Green spaces along roads, railways or waterways can contribute to the networking of species-rich habitats, but they also represent dispersal axes for invasive alien species. The primary objective of the research project is to obtain an inventory of predominant biotope types, vegetation and selected animal groups along the three modes of transport. A basis is to be created for:
- the optimization of measures to promote biodiversity,
- an improvement of ecological connectivity along transport routes across all modes of transport,
- and the targeted and cost-effective control of neobiota.
